Took to Galveston Bay last Saturday and caught my entire days bait for me and two others. Like the telescoping pole makes for easy storage.See more
The first day out with it went ok. The second day, though, was far different. The line is almost too light to be viable. The instructions on how to string it onto the rod are vague at best, and improper stringing leads quickly to a mess. After eight attempts to cast all wound up with a basketball sized knot on the pole, this whole thing wound up in the lake. A few days later, what I thought was a decent hit from a trout turned out to be yet another huge knot of line off of this pole. I dragged the pole in, stripped the reel down, and that's when I realized how cheap this thing is. Nothing is supported internally on any type of bearing. They balanced it all on a single ball bearing, the rest rides very loose in plastic sleeves. The individual parts are made from aluminum but they look like they were stamped with a bulldozer. Nothing is smooth at all, in fact, no one even made an attempt to craft any of the parts, they slapped an assortment of washers, levers, and gizmos together and shipped it. Once I corrected this, I put it back together and the bail quit working. I screwed with it for two hours before finally giving up and loosening the mounting screws a hair to let it work. Now it's loose. I checked a similar Shakespeare rod that I have, and it, too has a nail that shakes, wobbles, and just barely holds together. The only things I found useful in the tackle box were the bobbers. For trout, you need #8 to #12 single hooks, Powerbait, swivel clips, and a chain stringer. None of that came with it, no, nope, none, zilch, nada. There was nothing to land the fish, either, which is really odd considering anything you stick in a trout's mouth will get bitten by about 472 teeth. Oh, and the box itself? Yeah, you won't be hauling any of the required stuff in it, either. Its compartments are too small. I like the idea they have here with the micro kit you can stuff under the car seat, but the quality just is not there. If you want an I expensive trout kit, get the items above a la carte and then grab a Zebco casting reel/rod combo, it'll save you a lot of headaches and some bait, too.See more

Tips for choosing fishing gear

Gear up from Shop fishing gear for the fishing trip of a lifetime! No matter what type of fishing you enjoy, Shop fishing gear offers a large selection of quality and dependable fishing supplies. Shop online today for fishing rods, reels, or rod & reel combos. Whether you enjoy fly-fishing, saltwater fishing or are just learning to fish, Shop fishing gear has all the gear you need from the top brands.

Choosing fishing reels and rods

You need a rod that matches your preferred fishing style. Shorter rods have less bend and a shorter casting length, making them ideal for close-quarters fishing in shallow water. Longer rods let you cover more water and fish deeper, putting you within reach of prize-winning catches. For an amateur, opting for a mid-length rod around 7 feet long is a good option, as it provides the highest level of versatility as you decide which type of fishing you most enjoy.

Material is another important consideration. Most rods have a graphite composition, which makes them rigid and more sensitive to the activities of fish on the line, but fiberglass is a reliable alternative, offering increased strength and weight. A composite option provides the most versatility for different fishing situations. Regardless of material and length, rods tend to fall into two main categories:

Spinning rods: These rods are suited for use with spinning reels, which are good for novices. They’re straightforward to use and have an anti-reverse mechanism to stop the line from spooling when you get a bite.

Casting rods: These rods are suited for use with baitcasting reels, which are usually button controlled. Casting reels take greater skill to operate, but they work well when tackling larger, stronger fish, and they often have an enclosed design to reduce the effects of saltwater spray on the components. Casting rods are the preferred choice for professional anglers.

Fishing Gear & Accessories

Whether you’re fishing from a boat, a pier, a dock or the surf’s edge, you want the right items for your fishing style so you can catch the most fish. At Shop fishing gear, you can get all the right gear at the right prices so you can Save Money. Live Better.

What are some common fishing gear items and accessories?

Fishing gloves: Fishing gloves are handy for every season. Insulated fishing gloves can keep your hands warm in chilly weather, while fingerless sun gloves can protect your skin from damaging sun rays and salt water.

Rod racks and holders: Fishing rod racks and holders can have several uses. In addition to keeping your rods neatly organized when not in use, they can also be used while you’re on a boat for a hands-free fishing experience.

Knives: After reeling in a catch, you’re going to want to use a fillet knife to prepare your fish for eating. Fillet knives have thin flexible blades and provide good control so you can easily remove the bones and skin from a piece of fish.

Accessories: At Shop fishing gear, you’ll be able to find all the accessories you need for your next fishing trip. Tackle boxes can hold all your hooks, bait, fishing pliers, knives and a first aid kit. Fishing nets and traps can help you pull in fish from the water, while cans and buckets can hold your bait.

From fishing line to minnow cans, you’ll be able to find everything you need for a fishing adventure at Every Day Low Prices.
